Jarrell Miller Could Fight For WBA Title In December, Says Promoter
Jarrell Miller’s next fight could lead to a shot at a WBA heavyweight title.
Although a victory on the October 6 Matchroom Boxing card won’t get Miller an immediate shot at Anthony Joshua’s WBA “super” heavyweight title, Miller’s promoter Dmitry Salita said Miller could be in line to fight for the WBA “regular” title. Salita recently said he hopes to have Miller fight for the title in December if the undefeated contender does not get injured and is victorious in his fight against Tomasz Adamek.
“It’s up to the WBA to designate a fighter who he will fight for the WBA ‘regular’ title but we anticipate it being Fres Oquendo… We hope [to fight for the WBA ‘regular’ title] in December,” Salita said.
The title is currently being held by Manuel Charr, but in the wake of his failed drug test that canceled his title defense against Fres Oquendo, Charr could be stripped of the title. Since Oquendo is owed a shot at the title, a vacant title fight could be between Miller and Oquendo.
If that fight were to happen and a new WBA “regular” champion is crowned, the “regular” titleholder could be in line to face the “super” champion later in the future. The organization has previously stated that it is trying to reduced the number of WBA world champions per weight class and that effort includes forcing the secondary titleholders to face the “super” champions.
The October 6 card, which will be streamed in the United States and Canada on the DAZN streaming service, will feature three world title fights and a WBC Silver welterweight title fight between Jessie Vargas and Thomas Dulorme.
