James DeGale Wants Fight With Gennady Golovkin
Super middleweight champion James DeGale is no stranger to talking about wanting to fight middleweight unified champion Gennady Golovkin and recently reiterated his desires to do so.
DeGale spoke to Fighthub and said he would consider a fight with not just Golovkin, but with unified light heavyweight champion Andre Ward.
“100 percent. I can probably do middleweight,” DeGale said. “I’m a natural super middleweight. Going up in weight, I’d have to pick my opponent carefully. Ward though, I’d fight, because he’ll get in there and box you. He’ll give you a boxing lesson. I want the bigger fights where people think I’m going to lose. I want to fight Golovkin. We can do that. I’ll come down in weight. We can box at middleweight.”
This isn’t the first tim DeGale has expressed interest in a fight against Golovkin, calling out the middleweight champion back a couple of months ago for not moving up in weight. As much as DeGale would like to fight the middleweight king, he has his own battles to worry about. DeGale is set to face off against Badou Jack in a unification bout for DeGale’s IBF title and Jack’s WBC title. That fight will headline a fight card at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on January 14, 2017.
Golovkin, on the other hand, probably has his entire 2017 booked with a confirmed bout against Daniel Jacobs in March, and a probable fight with Canelo Alvarez sometime in the fall.
