Iran Diaz To Challenge For Srisaket Sor Rungvisai’s WBC Title According To Promoter

Srisaket Sor Rungvisai has an opponent for his upcoming WBC super flyweight title defense.

According to promoter Osvaldo Küchle, Iran Irak Diaz, the WBC’s No. 13 ranked super flyweight, will fight Sor Rungvisai in his upcoming title defense in Thailand in October.

“We consider this to be a great opportunity for Irak. In the last few outings, he succeeded in getting notable victories against boxers such as Hernán ‘Tyson’ Márquez and Luis ‘Nica’ Concepción. We think that he is ready for the opportunity (to face) one of the best super flyweight boxers in recent times,” Küchle tells ESPN Deportes.

Sor Rungvisai will be defending his title for the third time since winning the belt off of former top pound-for-pound boxer Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez in March 2017. Since then Sor Rungvisai has defended his title twice, most recently on the SuperFly 2 card back in February when he defeated mandatory challenger Juan Francisco Estrada.

The 31-year-old Sor Rungvisai was supposed to fight on the upcoming SuperFly 3 card, but withdrew from the card after personal issues caused him to step back from boxing for a bit. Sor Rungvisai recently had a stay-busy fight in Thailand, a non-title bout against Young Gil Bae. Sor Rungvisai quickly won with a first-round stoppage and it was shortly announced that he would defend his title in Thailand on October 6.

Diaz, who started fighting as a pro since 2008 and has amassed a 14-2-3 record. Diaz is unbeaten in his last four fights and has fought notable names such as Juan Hernandez Navarrete, Nordine Oubaali and the aforementioned Marquez and Concepcion.
