Humberto Soto Defeats Brandon Rios On DAZN Card In Mexico
Even at almost 40 years old, Humberto Soto is still able to entertain fans with highly exciting fights.
In the main event of Matchroom Boxing USA’s first card in Mexico streamed on DAZN, Soto won a unanimous decision against former world champion Brandon Rios. Soto won with scores of 118-112, 118-112 and 119-111.
The two veterans had an action-packed bout that saw both men come forward and throw nearly non-stop punches, but neither man went down. Rios was the aggressor, throwing more punches, but Soto was more accurate and landed the bigger shots. The 38-year-old Soto, a former world champion at lightweight and super featherweight, won his 69th career bout and has only lost three times since the start of 2008.
A number of top Mexican prospects fought on the undercard, including 2016 Olympian Joselito Velasquez. Velasquez won his fight against Kevin Villanueva by fifth-round TKO to improve his record to 8-0 and picked up his seventh career victory from inside the distance.
Alexis Espino won his debut by knocking out Victor Abrego less than two minutes into the second round. Also on the undercard, Hector Tanajara captured the WBC USNBC lightweight title with a technical decision against Ivan Delgado. Other results include Sulem Urbina defeating Judith Rodriguez by unanimous decision, Diego Pacheco winning a four-round decision against Alberto Aguilar and Shakhram Giyasov stopping Edgar Puerta in the fifth round. In a rematch of their split draw last December in Mexico, Joel Cordova won a split decision against Jose Briegel Quirino.
