Guillermo Rigondeaux Not Impressed With Boxing’s Featherweight Division, Talks Ward-Kovalev 2

WBA super bantamweight Guillermo Rigondeaux is not really impressed with the top class boxers of the featherweight division.

In a media scrum days before his next title defense, Rigondeaux said he doesn’t pay much attention to the boxers at the featherweight division and that they should be impressed with him. The five world major world champions at featherweight are Leo Santa Cruz, Abner Mares, Gary Russell Jr., Lee Selby and Oscar Valdez, who have a combined five total defense with their respective titles. Rigondeaux has defended a version of the WBA super bantamweight title nine times.

“None of them are impressive to me,” Rigondeaux said. “I’m the one they should be impressed by. We live off the daily work that we do and the results that we get.”

Rigondeaux also spoke about the pay-per-view headliner of Andre Ward vs. Sergey Kovalev for the unified light heavyweight world title.

“These are two stars and they are going to have a great fight,” Rigondeaux said. “They’re coming in here to fight and the only thing I can tell you is that the winner will be the one who the is most prepared and disciplined.”

Rigondeaux is fighting Moises Flores as the co-feature for Ward vs. Kovalev 2 pay-per-view in a unification bout for Rigondeaux’s WBA title and Flores’ IBO title. Fightful will have coverage of Ward vs. Kovalev 2 on June 17 and a podcast as soon as the podcast ends.
