Gervonta Davis Misses Weight, Stripped Of IBF Junior Lightweight Title
The co-main event of the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor pay-per-view card just became a lot less significant.
The fight, which pitted Mayweather protégé Gervonta Davis against Francisco Fonseca for Davis' IBF junior lightweight title, will now be for the vacant IBF title after Davis missed weight the day before the fight. Davis was stripped of the title for weighing in at 132 pounds, two pounds over the junior lightweight limit of 130 pounds.
Fonseca weighed in at 130 pounds and will be the only one able to win the vacant belt. If Davis wins, the title remains vacant.
Davis won the title earlier this year when he beat Jose Pedraza on the James DeGale vs. Badou Jack television card and defended the title once when he stopped Liam Walsh inside three rounds back in May.
Davis took to social media to comment on missing weight.
With the title vacated, there is only one world title fight on the August 26 card in which both boxers fighting are eligible to walk away with the title: the WBA "regular" light heavyweight title that champion Nathan Cleverly and challenger Badou Jack are fighting for.
Fightful will have complete coverage of the card, including a post-fight podcast with Sean Ross Sapp, "Showdown" Joe Ferraro and Carlos Toro live on Fightful and on YouTube.
