Gervonta Davis, Abner Mares Feuding Over Social Media, Could Lead To Fight

Gervonta Davis does not have a fight lined up for him officially, but a social media feud with a former featherweight champion could just net Davis his next title fight.

On August 15, former WBA “regular” featherweight champion Abner Mares made a post on Instagram issuing a challenge to Davis, the current WBA “super” super featherweight champion, which can be seen below.

In response to the call-out on Instagram, Davis took to Twitter to write, “Abner Mares, you wanna say sorry or?” Mares made a follow-up response and the exchange between the two can be seen below.

It was then when Floyd Mayweather, founder of Mayweather Promotions who promotes Davis, posted a teaser poster for a potential fight between Davis and Mares.

Davis, a two-time super featherweight champion, won the WBA title back in April when he defeated former featherweight titleholder Jesus Cuellar in Brooklyn, New York. Davis previously held the IBF super featherweight title but was stripped of the title last year when he missed weight the day before a title defense against Francisco Fonseca.

Mares’ last time out in the ring saw him lose a rematch to Leo Santa Cruz in the main event of a Showtime Championship Boxing card from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Mares lost the fight, for the WBA “super” featherweight title by unanimous decision.
