George Groves To Undergo Surgery, Hopes WBSS Finals Gets Moved To July
George Groves one of the World Boxing Super Series' super middleweight finalists, will undergo surgery for a shoulder injury suffered in his last fight.
Groves wrote on social media that he will have surgery and won't be ready to fight on his scheduled June 2 WBSS final against Callum Smith. Groves also said he and his team will apply for the final to be postponed one month so that he can be fully recovered. The super middleweight finals was originally scheduled to take place at the O2 Arena in London, but if the date gets moved back, there is no guarantee on if the fight still takes place at the O2 Arena.
Groves dislocated his left shoulder in the final round of his World Boxing Super Series semifinal fight against Chris Eubank Jr. at the Manchester Arena. Groves won the fight by unanimous decision, defending the WBA "Super" super middleweight title and winning the IBO super middleweight title. The IBO title has since been stripped from Groves after Groves' team elected not to pay the sanctioning fees that came with being the champion and the IBO title is currently vacant.
Smith won his semifinal bout against Nieky Holzken by unanimous decision. Holzken was a last minute replacement after Juergen Braehmer, Smith's original opponent, went down with influenza the week of the fight.
