Gennady Golovkin: 10 Percent Chance There’s A Rematch Against Canelo Alvarez

Although Gennady Golovkin has a May 5 date with Vanes Martirosyan on HBO, many already believed that a September rematch with Canelo Alvarez is a forgone conclusion, but Golovkin is not as confident.

Golovkin recently talked with Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports and said a rematch with Alvarez happening stands at about 10 percent at best. Golovkin was supposed to fight Alvarez on May 5 in a rematch from their first encounter last September, which ended in a split draw, but after testing positive twice for clenbuterol in February, Alvarez withdrew from the fight and then given a six-month suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission that is expected to end in August.

“I would say it’s about a 10 percent probability at this point that it happens. I would say only about 10 percent that it happens. I think 10 percent is high; it’s bigger than it should be,” Golovkin said.

Even if Golovkin wanted to pursue a rematch with Alvarez, Golovkin has to deal with issues regarding his IBF middleweight title. The IBF recently said Golovkin can keep his middleweight title but has to fight mandatory challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko by early August.

Golovkin ultimately didn’t work much on May 5 when he knocked out Martirosyan in just two rounds on the HBO telecast, which included the first live women’s boxing match in the history of the network featuring undisputed women’s welterweight champion Cecilia Braekhus.
