Gavin McDonnell’s World Title Shot Made Official, Wants Him And Brother Jamie To Be The British Klitschkos
Gavin McDonnell's going to get his chance to join his twin brother Jamie as world champion and become the British version of the Klitschko brothers, according to him.
Gavin's first shot at a world title is official when he takes on Rey Vargas for the vacant WBC world super bantamweight title at the Hull Ice Arena on February 25. That fight will be show live on Sky Sports. If Gavin wins, he joins WBA bantamweight champion Jamie as world champions, making them the first British twins to accomplish that.
In a press release for the announcement of the fight, Gavin said he is excited to get a chance to fight for a world title and to hold a belt like his brother.
“I have to pinch myself that it’s finally here,” McDonnell said. “All the hard work I’ve put in over the years, it feels like it’s meant to be this moment. I have seen my brother become world champion, I have seen my gym-mate Tony Bellew become world champion and I believe now I’m ready and to be let off the leash. I’m ready to become world champion. Two twin brothers on the scene, both World champions standing side by side – the Klitschko brothers of Doncaster! We were in the same boat me and my brother, fighting an unbeaten Mexican banger. Having home advantage is key and I’ve wanted that."
The WBC announced last week that Vargas and Gavin were to fight for the vacant title. Vargas was the No. 1 contender to face Hozumi Hasegawa, but when Hasegawa retired some time ago, Vargas was ordered to face the next leading available contender for the vacant title. That turned out to be McDonnell, who was No. 2 in the WBC's rankings.
