Floyd Mayweather: I Think Canelo vs. GGG 2 Should Still Happen

Floyd Mayweather Jr. gives his thoughts on Canelo Alvarez’s positive test for clenbuterol and if his fight against Gennady Golovkin should still happen.

The former world champion spoke to FIghtHype.com and said this type of thing happens sometimes and said the fight should still take place.

“This sh*t happens. I don’t know what else to say. It’s crazy… I think the fight still should happen,” Mayweather said.

Alvarez tested positive for traces of clenbuterol on two separate tests in February with Alvarez claiming contaminated meat is the reason he tested positive. Since then, the Nevada State Athletic Commission temporarily suspended Alvarez and the commission will discuss Alvarez’s suspension on April 18. If Alvarez’s suspension carries through, the meeting, then his scheduled May 5 fight against Golovkin, unified WBA, WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight champion, is most likely canceled.

But Mayweather offered another alternative in favor of keeping the fight on May 5 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

“So say [Canelo] got busted ok? From here all the way to the fight, it should just be random blood and urine testing. They should fight,” Mayweather said.

Mayweather and Alvarez do share some history in the ring. Mayweather defeated Alvarez on pay-per-view in 2013 to win the WBA “super” and WBC junior middleweight titles by majority decision. Alvarez’s rematch against Golovkin was supposed to take place at the T-Mobile Arena, the same site of their first encounter last September, where the fight ended in a split draw.

Mayweather’s comments can be seen in the video at this link.
