Errol Spence vs. Shawn Porter Preview:

PBC’s next pay-per-view, a welterweight title unification between titleholders Errol Spence Jr. and Shawn Porter on September 28, will answer several questions that go beyond the winner of the main event.

There’s plenty of intrigue in the main event alone, but the real intrigue for those interested in the boxing industry at large is how well it will do on pay-per-view with the full marketing power of FOX, who have done everything possible to ensure this fight ends up as a success.

For some, this event may have the best overall show, but without any truly mainstream fighters competing, the success, or failure, will depend on how well the marketing worked.

FOX has worked tirelessly to try and put awareness of the fight out into the masses. Without the help from FOX, this pay-per-view could likely land somewhere around the low 200,000s in terms of buyrate, but now we’re looking at around at something closer to 300,000 buys. With so much uncertainty over the drawing power for both men, industry leaders have this fight getting as low as 200,000 buys and as high as 400,000 buys, though given everything at play, the range is more likely to be somewhere between 275,000-325,000 buys.

In some regards, the pay-per-view’s success could be a precursor to how WWE’s impending move to FOX will perform. WWE’s SmackDown show is coming to FOX on October 4 and has been getting heavy promotion largely due to its presence during football broadcasts. Knowing how well this pay-per-view does thanks to FOX won’t just give people more insight as to how well WWE could perform, but also how well future PBC events go.

The idea that Spence is now a superstar because of how relatively well his first fight on pay-per-view main event did against Mikey Garcia did (at least 300,000 buys) and the fight against Porter being his second straight on this type of platform does deserve some merit. Yet, there is still so much about Spence that isn’t known.

Can he truly carry the sport as a reliable pay-per-view draw even with big matchups against the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Keith Thurman and Terence Crawford? Does he know how to truly turn casual fans into hardcore fans just by watching his biggest fights? Is he truly the best welterweight in the world?

As for the fight itself, this is an interesting bout that at first, seems to be a fairly easy win for Spence, but in reality, it actually is a much closer bout than oddsmakers have it. Spence has never been truly tested throughout his title run. With wins against Kell Brook after losing to Gennadiy Golovkin, Lamont Peterson, Carlos Ocampo and Mikey Garcia moving up two weight classes to fight Spence in March. Porter is really the toughest fight of Spence’s career.

Even with Spence’s somewhat lackluster performance against Yordenis Ugas, Porter does present some problems for Spence and really for any boxer out in the welterweight division. Porter is a cagey fighter, looking to roughhouse with his opponent and make the fight extremely uncomfortable, even to the point where some people call him a dirty fighter. Maybe by today’s standards Porter might be a dirty fighter, but he’s not dirty to the point where he is hitting low blows two or three times in his fights.

Many expect Spence to win by stoppage, but don’t be surprised if the fight goes the distance. Spence is likely going to win, but this fight alone won’t determine the best 147-pound in the world. Not until we see the winner take on Crawford and Pacquiao.

News And Notes From The World Of Boxing:

Japan:

– Former amateur standout Ryosuke Nishida recently took his pro level test and is set to join the Mutoh Gym in Tokyo as a professional, the latest in a number of former notable boxers from the unpaid ranks to go to Mutoh. Nishida will fight on October 3 in Thailand in a six-round bout at super bantamweight.

– Per Asian Boxing, Teiken Promotions is set for a show on November 2 with multiple noteworthy prospects in action. The main event will have once-beaten Shuya Masaki take on an opponent yet to be named. Other fighters set for the show are Kenshin Oshima, Masaya Tamayama, Hayate Kaji, Kuntae Lee and Mikito Nakano.

– Japanese national junior welterweight champion Koki Inoue, who is the cousin of current bantamweight world champion Naoya Inoue, will face Jheritz Chavez for the WBO Asia Pacific title on December 2.

– A very unique China vs. Japan boxing card has been announced for October 17 in Shanghai, China has been announced. The following fights were announced:

• Wulan Tuolehazi vs. Satoshi Tanaka: WBA International flyweight title
• Xiang Li vs. Ryu Horikawa: WBO Youth light flyweight title
• Ayati Saiike vs. Hiroki Hanabusa
• Yeshibolati Nasiyiwula vs. Amato Wantanabe

– The October 30 Korakuen Hall show in Tokyo will have a couple of notable things take place: One is the retirement ceremony of former world title challenger Ryuichi Funai and the other is the pro debut of Yudai Shigeoka. Shigeoka was originally supposed to try and have a run at the 2020 Olympics, but his weight class was removed and so he is expected to have a six-round bout at minimumweight. Unbeaten prospect Shu Utsuki is expected to be in the main event.

– Undefeated prospect Juiki Tatsuyoshi will face Masayasu Nakamura on December 17 at the EDION Arena in Osaka. The plan for Tatsuyoshi, assuming he wins, is to fight for titles in 2020.

United Kingdom:

– IBO super featherweight champion Terri Harper has signed a promotional deal with Matchroom Boxing with her first fight under the new deal already set. Harper will defend her title against Vivian Obenauf on the undercard of the Katie Taylor vs. Christina Linardatou fight taking place in Manchester on November 2.

– Irish amateur standout Paddy Donovan will make his pro debut on an MTK Global show on October 11 at Ulster Hall in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The card will be streamed on ESPN+ in the United States.

– The IBF has ordered Kid Galahad and Claudio Marrero to fight a title eliminator for the featherweight championship being held by Josh Warrington.

– Natasha Jonas and Martin Murray will return to the ring on the November 15 MTK Global card from Liverpool. The card, which will be streamed on ESPN+ in the United States, will feature Rocky Fielding’s first fight since losing to Canelo Alvaez in December 2018.

Rest of Europe:

– Matchroom Boxing Italy’s October schedule is set with two shows on October 11 and 25 at the PalaTrento in Trento and Allianz Cloud in Milan, respectively. Here are the confirmed fights for both shows.

October 11 in Trento:

• Fabio Turchi vs. Tommy McCarthy: WBC International Silver cruiserweight title title
• Kamil Szeremeta vs. Matteo Signani: EBU European middleweight title
• Francesco Grandelli vs. Reece Bellotti: WBC International Silver featherweight title

October 25 in Milan:

• Daniele Scardina vs. TBA: IBF International super middleweight title
• Francesco Patera vs. Domenico Valentino: EBU European lightweight title
• Maxim Prodan vs. Tony Dixon: IBF International welterweight title

– Leon Bunn will defend his IBF International light heavyweight title against former world title challenger Enrico Koelling on November 2 at the CGM Arena in Koblenz, Germany. This will be Bunn’s first title defense since stopping Leon Harth in the ninth round of their May 4 bout in Frankfurt while Koelling is coming off a loss to EBU European champion Dominic Boesel in October 2018. What makes the event unique is that the November 2 card is a special event that will see ticket revenue and money raised from the evening donated to three charities: Laughing Hearts, a charity that provides support and opportunities to children affected by poverty, Parents’ Initiative for Children with Cancer Koblenz, who provide support to the parents of children suffering from cancer in Koblenz and Education Unlimited, an education charity who encourage diversity and training across Europe.

– EBU European bantamweight champion Georges Ory will defend his title against Karim Guerfi on November 15 in Pessac, France.

– Spanish rising contender Jon Fernandez is back on a win streak, stopping Miguel Enrique Arevalo in the third round to win the WBC Latino lightweight title, his first championship at 135 pounds. Fernandez has bounced back well since a loss to O’Shaquie Foster in 2018, winning his next three fights, all in three rounds or less.

United States:

– Top Rank has announced that it has signed former heavyweight title challenger Carlos Takam to a co-promotional deal alongside Takam’s already existing promoter Star Boxing. Takam will make his Star Boxing/Top Rank debut on an ESPN platform in early 2020.

– PBC announced the following card will be televised on FS1 on November 2 from the MGM National Harbor in Maryland. The two fights that were scheduled in the initial announcement is Brian Castano vs. Wale Omotoso and Javier Fortuna vs. Jesus Cuellar. Even if the fights are mildly interesting and PBC loads up the undercard, putting this while competing with Canelo Alvarez vs. Sergey Kovalev on DAZN, Miguel Berchelt vs. Jason Sosa on ESPN and UFC 244 (headlined by Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal) on ESPN PPV will make this card a very hard watch and viewership for this show could end up being abismal.

– Showtime announced a show in Reading, Pennsylvania on October 26. Here is the television card, which is a pretty solid one from top to bottom with every fight promising to be entertaining: Erickson Lubin vs. Terrell Gausha: WBC junior middleweight title eliminator; Robert Easter Jr. vs. Adrian Granados; Rau’shee Warren vs. Emmanuel Rodriguez: WBC bantamweight title eliminator

– UFC Fight Pass and CES Boxing have announced a three-event deal that will have three fight cards (October 11, November 23 and December 7) be streamed on Fight Pass. The October 11 card will feature Chad Dawson in action against Denis Grachev.

– Carlos Morales vs. Mercito Gesta has been added to November 14 edition of Golden Boy Promotions’ Thursday Night Fights that will be streamed on RingTV.com and on Facebook Watch.

– Super featherweight contender Lamont Roach Jr. has signed an extension to his promotional deal with Golden Boy Promotions. Roach is currently preparing for his first world title fight against WBO champion Jamel Herring on November 9 in Fresno, California.

Miscellaneous Notes From The World Of Boxing:

– The WBA has announced that it will have the 98th Biannual Convention take place in Fuzhou, China from November 6-11. The announcement came after both the governing body and China has strengthened their relationship in recent years. The last time the WBA Convention was held on Chinese soil was in 2007 in Chengdu.

– The parties for both WBA minimumweight champion Knockout CP Freshmart (real name Thammanoon Niyomtrong) and mandatory challenger Jose Argumedo have requested for an extension on negotiations for a title fight and suspend a purse bid scheduled for September 16, which the WBA approved.
