Fight-size Boxing Update: “GGG” Trainer On Crawford-Pacquiao, Fights Made Official, Champion Stripped Of Belt
Here is your fight-size boxing update for July 26!
– The July 23 light welterweight unification bout between Terence Crawford and Viktor Postol will be replayed on HBO television on July 30 at 10:15 p.m. ET.
– On the subject of Crawford, because of his win against Postol, he is now the likely candidate to be Manny Pacquiao‘s opponent on his return fight on Nov. 5. Gennady Golovkin‘s trainer, Abel Sanchez, said that Manny Pacquiao would beat Terence Crawford should the fight be contested at 147 pounds, but Crawford would win if they fought at 140 pounds, telling dailynews.com the following:
“I think Terence beats Manny at 140 pounds because Manny would kill himself to get down there, no matter what he says,” said Sanchez. ”But I think Manny wins at 147.”
– Former cruiserweight world titleholder Marco Huck (39-3-1, 27 KO) will seek his second win in a row since losing his belt when he faces Ovill McKenzie (25-12-1, 13 KO) on Sept. 24 in Frankfurt, Germany.
– Junior flyweight titleholder Donnie Nietes (38-1-4, 22 KOs), who has defended his 108-pound belt nine times, is expected to try out the flyweight division when he next fights on Sept. 24 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Nietes’ likely opponent is former junior flyweight titleholder Edgar Sosa (52-9, 30 KOs).
– A lightweight title eliminator was ordered between Michael Perez (24-1-2, 11 KOs) and Spain-based Russian Petr Petrov (37-4-2, 18 KOs) to produce a mandatory challenger for the winner of the Sept. 23 fight between titleholder Anthony Crolla and former titlist Jorge Linares. The WBA has given Perez and Petrov until Aug. 1 to inform the organization if they are willing to participate in negotiations.
– Ruslan Chagaev (34-2-1, 1 NC, 21 KO) has been stripped of his version of the heavyweight title for failure to pay sanctioning fees. Chagaev held the WBA’s “regular” title. He was stripped because, according to the organization, he and promoter Timur Dugazaev have repeatedly failed to pay $40,750 in sanctioning fees related to Chagaev’s majority decision victory against Fres Oquendo to win the vacant belt in July 2014 in Grozny, Russia.
