Exclusive: Mikey Garcia Not Looking Past Robert Easter Jr. Fight

Some may think that Mikey Garcia’s recent talks about fighting IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. later this year is indication that Garcia is not fully focused on his lightweight unification bout against Robert Easter Jr., but Garcia said that is far from the case.

In a recent conference call, Garcia spoke to Fightful to talk about his fight against Easter, which will take place on July 28. Garcia had previously mentioned a possible fight against Spence at the end of the year, which would mean Garcia would move up in weight again in an attempt to win a world title in his fifth weight classes.

With a potential superfight looming over the horizon past July 28, Garcia doesn’t think he’s looking past Easter. Garcia added that he is willing to talk about potential future opponents and that it wouldn’t be and distraction, stating that he has had a long training camp to prepare for the tough task ahead of him in the form of Easter.

“I will discuss anything, any topics available, any name being mentioned. I have no problem, it doesn’t distract me from my opponent in front of me. Robert Easter Jr. is a tough challenger that I need to take seriously and I really do so that’s why we did a nine-week training camp and got great sparring, got the right training and diet, everything. Speaking about other opponents, other fighters and the future doesn’t affect me at all. I’m willing to speak about anything with anybody that interests me and my career,” Garcia said.

Garcia’s fight against Easter for the unified WBC/IBF lightweight titles is set to headline a Showtime broadcast live from the Staples Center and Fightful will have live coverage of Garcia vs. Easter. You can listen to Garcia’s comments in the video above.
