Eleider Alvarez Suffers Injury, Won’t Compete In June
Former light heavyweight champion Eleider Alvarez will be out for the foreseeable future.
Alvarez suffered a torn ligament in his foot during training camp for his next fight that was yet to be announced, thus putting him out of commission for the next few weeks. Alvarez was planned to fight sometime in June, but there was no word on what date was the former WBO champion supposed to fight on. In a report by BoxingScene.com, Promoter Yvon Michel spoke on the news of Alvarez missing time off and confirmed it.
“Eleider Alvarez will unfortunately have to wait a little longer before returning to the ring,” Michel said.
Alvarez shocked the boxing world when he scored a stoppage win over Sergey Kovalev in August 2018 to win the WBO. The fight came together as Alvarez chose to face Kovalev outright instead of having to compete an interim WBC title bout against Oleksandr Gvozdyk with the winner getting an eventual shot at then-WBC champion Adonis Stevenson.
In Alvarez’s first fight as champion, he had a rematch against Kovalev in Frisco, Texas this past February on a Top Rank card on ESPN+. The rematch headlined the event, which had a total of three world title fights, but Alvarez’s fight with Kovalev was the only one where the title switched hands. Kovalev dominated Alvarez throughout 12 rounds, winning a unanimous decision to become a three-WBO champion.
