Eddie Hearn: Jessie Vargas Could Face Humberto Soto Next

Although Jessie Vargas may not have his opponent set for April 26, Eddie Hearn is hinting that he could be face long-time veteran Humberto Soto.

In an interview with AB Boxing News, Hearn talked about Vargas’ desire to challenge WBO junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia down the road, but stated that before that, Vargas will take on someone else to build him up at 154 pounds. That’s when Hearn stated that one possible fight for Vargas’ next bout on April 26 would be a fight against Soto at a 151 or 152-pound catchweight.

“That’s the fight (Munguia vs. Vargas). I think Munguia would be a great fight for Jessie Vargas. I think it’s likely you’ll see [Vargas} fight Humberto Soto at a catchweight in LA. That’s a good fight. [Soto] is coming off a win over Brandon Rios. I like the Liam Smith fight. I like the Kell Brook fight. All those fights are available to [Vargas] but he’s got his eyes on Jaime Munguia for sure and that could be really big,” Hearn said.

Soto defeated Rios by unanimous decision back in February in the main event of a Matchroom Boxing USA card from Mexico. Soto, a former super featherweight and lightweight world champion, has won his last four fights while Vargas has had his last two fights end in a draw.

The April 26 Matchroom Boxing USA card will be streamed on DAZN in the United States live at The Forum in California. The main event of the show is the highly-anticipated rematch between Srisaket Sor Rungvisai and Juan Francisco Estrada for the WBC super flyweight title. Also on the card is a super bantamweight title unification between WBA champion Daniel Roman and IBF champion TJ Doheny.
