Eddie Hearn: “The Heavyweight Division Is Bigger Than Ever”
Eddie Hearn is excited for the heavyweight division and where it stands at this moment.
Speaking in a press conference for Devin Haney’s Matchroom Boxing debut in Maryland on May 25, Hearn took a little bit of time to discuss the state of the heavyweights. Hearn believes the division is in a solid place right now with multiple stars leading the pack such as Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury.
“The heavyweight division is in a great place and is bigger than ever. You have the biggest and best heavyweight in the world Anthony Joshua making his U.S. debut next weekend on DAZN against Andy Ruiz Jr. You have Deontay Wilder with another piece of the heavyweight championship and he just scored a brilliant knockout over Dominic Breazeale last weekend. There’s former champion Tyson Fury fighting again soon. It’s a great time for the heavyweight division,” Hearn said.
Aside from the aforementioned heavyweight stars, there are a number of notable fighters in the division that are slowly emerging as contenders. Two of those rising stars, Michael Hunter and Filip Hrgovic are going to fight on that May 25 card from Maryland that will be streamed on DAZN. Hearn spoke highly of Hunter, saying that he can be someone who can fight for a world title in the future.
“But this weekend we have Michael Hunter. He is a guy who refuses to say no – he takes fights on short notice, he fights anyone you put in front of him. He is a guy who is determined to get a title shot sooner rather than later and I think he is going to prove this weekend why he is deserving of that shot,” Hearn said.
Hunter will take on Brazilian boxer Fabio Maldonado while Hrgovic will face Gregory Corbin on the main card, which will be streamed on DAZN starting at 9 p.m. ET.
