Donnie Nietes vs. Aston Palicte To Take Place On August 18

Donnie Nietes’ quest to become boxing’s next quadruple champion will see him fight for the WBO super flyweight title in August.

Nietes, who has held world titles at minimumweight, light flyweight and flyweight, will fight Aston Palicte for the vacant WBO title on August 18 in Cebu City, Phillipines. The fight was announced by Palicte’s manager Jason Soong on social media.

"Contract signed—- let’s get ready to ruuuuuuuumble———— Aston Francis Palicte
WBO WORLD SUPER FLYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP on August 18 in Cebu
—-more details to follow!" Soong wrote on social media.

The 36-year-old Nietes holds one of boxing’s most impressive unbeaten streaks today, having not lost a fight since 2004. Nietes’ last fight saw him knock out Juan Carlos Reveco back in February on the second edition of HBO’s “SuperFly” event. Since then, Nietes announced he would be vacating his title in order to move up in weight and win a world title in a fourth weight class, something only 17 men had ever done previously in boxing. With the move up in weight, Nietes was immediately slotted as the No. 1 super flyweight with the demotion of previously top-ranked Rex Tso.

It was also right around that time that Naoya Inoue, who previously held the title, would also be moving up in weight to challenge for the WBA “regular” bantamweight title currently being held by Jamie McDonnell. That fight will take place on May 25 in Tokyo.

Palicte is the WBO’s No. 2 super flyweight and is coming off a TKO win over Jose Alfredo Rodriguez last December to win the NABF super flyweight title.
