December WBA “Regular” Super Middleweight Title Fight Postponed
WBA "regular" super middleweight champion Tyron Zeuge's upcoming title defense against Issac Ekpo has been postponed.
The fight, which was supposed to take place on December 2, has been postponed due to Zeuge being ill, according to promoter Kalle Sauerland. Sauerland, who also is heavily involved with the planning of the World Boxing Super Series, told ESPN that the current plan is to reschedule the fight for possibly March.
The card itself has not been canceled and will move forward as originally planned. The new main event will be a 10-round heavyweight fight between Otto Wallin and Gabriel Enguema. That fight was originally the co-main event of the card, which is scheduled to take place at the MBS Arena in Potsdam, Germany.
Zeuge has held the WBA title since late 2016. Zeuge originally defeated Ekpo via technical decision, but the WBA decided to order a rematch between the two boxers. Zeuge retained the title by scores of 49-46, 48-47 and 49-47 in a fight cut short when an accidental head butt in the third round left Zeuge with a nasty cut over his right eye. The fight, which happened to take place at the MBS Arena, also had the Global Union Boxing super middleweight title, tough it is considered only a minor world title.
Since the first fight against Ekpo, Zeuge has made one title defense, a unanimous decision victory over Paul Smith back in the summer. Zeuge currently holds the "regular" title while George Groves is the WBA "super" champion.
