David Benavidez, Luis Nery, Chris Arreola Victorious On Spence vs. Garcia Undercard
Errol Spence Jr. might have been the only boxer to walk out of AT&T Stadium holding a world title, but several boxers moved one step closer towards getting a title shot of their own.
In the co-main event of Spence’s IBF welterweight title defense against Mikey Garcia, David Benavidez easily dispatched J’Leon Love in the second round of their fight. Benavidez is the current WBC super middleweight “Champion in Recess” after being stripped of the world title for failing a drug test last year. Benavidez was originally set to be the next man in line to face Anthony Dirrell for the title, but the governing body recently announced that it will make a vote on March 18 in regards to the status of the title.
Also on the card was former WBC bantamweight champion Luis Nery, taking on former world champion McJoe Arroyo. Nery dominated Arroyo, dropping him four times throughout the fight and Arroyo’s corner stopped the fight after four rounds. Nery has won three straight fights since being stripped of his title for being overweight right before a title defense against Shinsuke Yamanaka in early 2018.
Opening the main card was former heavyweight title challenger Chris Arreola, who stopped Jean Pierre Augustin in the third round. Arreola is looking to get back into the title mix for one last time, telling Fightful in a recent media call that his current run towards a heavyweight championship is his last one.
Over on the FS1 prelim card, there was only one fight that was televised: a heavyweight bout between former world champion Charles Martin and Gregory Corbin. Martin dominated the fight, but Corbin’s repeated low blows were the reason for his defeat. The referee put a stop to the fight in the eighth round after Corbin landed a total of four low blows during the fight, awarding Martin the victory.
