Claressa Shields: Fight Against Christina Hammer “A True Super Fight”

It’s rare for boxing to get a fight for an undisputed title, much more so for women’s boxing, but Claressa Shields and Christina Hammer are ready to throw down in a historic showdown.

The two fighters will meet for the undisputed WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF middleweight titles on April 13 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. But before the two champions meet in the ring, they met in a press conference in New York to discuss their upcoming matchup. Shields talked about the significance of the fight, calling it a “super fight” in women’s boxing.

“I think for women’s boxing this is a true super fight that we’ve never gotten before. We’ve never had a fight like this in women’s boxing. It’s great to make this happen and us being from two parts of the world makes this fight even better,” Shields said.

As for her rival, Shields, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, said she will make Hammer quit in the ring and show her that Shields is the dominant boxer.

“I want to make her quit. I don’t want her to just know I’m a good fighter, I want her to know I’m great. I wish we could go 12 rounds, but I’ll be prepared for all 10 rounds,” Shields said.

The fight was originally supposed to take place late last year, but it was called off after Hammer suffered a medical issue that would keep her out of action for a few months. Now the two are set to fight in the main event of a Showtime-televised card for the undisputed title.
