Chris Van Heerden Signs With Top Rank, Hopes For Errol Spence Jr. Rematch

Chris van Heerden has signed with Top Rank Boxing as he looks to put his career back on track and hopefully fight for a world title.

Top Rank recently announced it has signed welterweight contender Chris van Heerden to a promotional deal. Van Heerden will also be working with former world champion Brian Viloria and is looking to get a shot at one of the four major world titles at 147 pounds.

Van Heerden last fought in April in Louisville as part of a welterweight tournament organized by the WBC and Evander Holyfield‘s Real Deal Sports and Entertainment. Van Heerden defeated Timo Schwarzkopf in the quarterfinals, but no semifinal card was ever made as Holyfield’s company eventually folded. With van Heerden signing with Top Rank, he stated that he will be looking for a fight against current IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr.

“My ambition is to become a World Champion again. Top Rank has lots of options for me but I want to fight any Champion. I’d also like a rematch with Errol Spence as I feel that no one has seen the best out of me yet and I know that I could trouble Spence when I have been active and that will happen with Top Rank,” van Heerden said in a press release.

The 31-year-old van Heerden has previously held the IBO and IBF International welterweight title throughout his career and sports a 26-2-1 record. He is currently on a three-fight win streak since losing a 2015 bout against Spence. Although van Heerden did not fight at all in 2017, he did spar with former UFC champion Conor McGregor, helping him train for his highly-publicized fight against Floyd Mayweather.
