Chris Eubank Jr. vs. Matt Korobov Set For December 7, Interim WBA Middleweight Title At Stake

The co-main event for Showtime’s return to the Barclays Center has been announced.

IBO super middleweight champion Chris Eubank Jr. will face Matt Korobov for the newly-created interim WBA middleweight title on December 7. The fight will be the co-feature bout to the WBC middleweight title fight between Jermall Charlo and Dennis Hogan fight headlining the telecast.

Eubank hasn’t fought since February when he scored a victory over former super middleweight champion James DeGale. Eubank, who has faced the likes of George Groves, Billy Joe Saunders and Avni Yildirim, will be fighting at middleweight for the first time since he last defended the British title in 2016. This will also be Eubank’s first fight in the United States.

Korobov is looking for his first win since March 2018 and will be fighting for an interim middleweight title for the second time in the past 12 months. Korobov unsuccessfully challenged for the interim WBC title when he faced Charlo last year. Since then, Korobov has only fought once which was a majority draw against Immanuwel Aleem.

The interim title being added comes without much of an explanation. The WBA already has two champions at middleweight in “Super” titleholder Canelo Alvarez and “Regular” titleholder Ryota Murata. Although Canelo Alvarez is moving up two weight classes for his next fight against Sergey Kovalev, Murata is defending his version of the WBA middleweight title against Steven Butler in December.
