Chris Algieri Looking For World Title Fights In 2019
Former world champion Chris Algieri is ready to return to the world title scene and is looking at 2019 as the year he gets back on top.
In a recent press release, Algieri, once the WBO junior welterweight champion, stated that he wants to remain active throughout the year until he gets the opportunity to fight for another title. Algieri is set to fight on January 18 at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden and is already planning to fight in March.
“I see world title fights for me this year,” Algieri said. “The key is being active. I want to fight every other month, so the focus is win on January 18, get another fight in March and just keep building… This fight represents another step towards my ultimate goal of regaining my world title at Super Lightweight. I understand the magnitude of this event and know that at this stage of my career each fight is the most important of my life.”
Algieri returned to the ring after a 31-month long break from the sport back in November, defeating Angel Hernandez by unanimous decision. Prior to that win, Algieri had lost three of his four previous bouts, including losses to Manny Pacquiao and Errol Spence Jr.
The 34-year-old Algieri will be fighting Daniel Gonzalez on the undercard of the DAZN boxing card at MSG. The card will be headlined by Demetrius Andrade vs. Artur Akavov for the WBO middleweight title and will also feature Amanda Serrano fighting Eva Voraberger for the vacant WBO Female super flyweight title.
