Carl Froch Says Gennady Golovkin Can’t Beat Him
Retired boxer Carl Froch continued his crusade against Gennady Golovkin and still insists that Golovkin can’t beat Froch.
Froch spoke to Boxing News magazine and said he was offered a fight against Golovkin some time ago, but Golovkin’s camp wasn’t interested in having the middlleweight champion move up to 172 pounds for the bout.
“The Golovkin thing came up and I said ‘fight me at 172 pounds and I’ll think about it’ and he wanted me to go down to 166, he wouldn’t even come up to super-middle and I was already retired by that point,” Froch said. “These people who sit there thinking they’re experts and say I retired rather than fight Golovkin, it’s like saying Bruce Lee died before he could beat Mike Tyson. It’s completely irrelevant.”
It’s not the first time Froch was critical of Golovkin, late last year Froch wrote a piece on skysports.com and and said he would beat Golovkin and that he wanted him to fight at super middleweight to prove his skills in the boxing ring.
“Golovkin is a small middleweight, I’m a big super-middleweight,” Froch said. “The fight was maybe talked about a year after I retired and it was never going to happen. Golovkin cannot win a fight against me, he’s not big enough. You can’t talk about Golovkin in the same breath as me.”
Froch last fought in 2014, defeating George Groves, retaining his unified WBA and IBF super middleweight titles. He retired with a 33-2 record as a professional boxer.
