UPDATE: FIGHT CANCELLED: Andres Gutierrez Injured Hours After Opponent Carl Frampton Misses Weight
After Carl Frampton uncharacteristically missed weight for his upcoming WBC featherweight title eliminator, opponent Andres Gutierrez suffered a freak accident and the fight is cancelled.
Gutierrez suffered facial cuts, bruising to the head and broke two teeth in the accident 24 hours before the featherweight showdown in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The accident was a result of Gutierrez slipping in his shower.
A statement, which can be seen below, was sent out announcing the fight cancelation.
“Cyclone Promotions and The SSE Arena regret to announce that the “Return of The Jackal” event scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday 29th July, has been cancelled due to an accident to Andres Gutierrez. It is hoped that the event will be re-scheduled but ticket holders are advised to retain their tickets and contact point of purchase for further information. We very much regret the inconvenience caused.”
Frampton, a former featherweight world champion, was set to fight Gutierrez for a chance to fight for the WBC featherweight title, but Frampton missed weight, losing out on the title eliminator opportunity. Now no one will be fighting on that eliminator.
Frampton would have still fought Gutierrez, but Gutierrez would have been the only one able to win the title eliminator. Frampton stepped on the scales the day before the fight and was measured at 127 pounds, one pound over the featherweight limit of 126 pounds.
The fight was supposed to be streamed in the United States by Showtime’s social media to kick off a big night of boxing capped off by Adrien Broner vs. Mikey Garcia at the Barclays Center. The video of the weigh in can be seen above.
