Alvarez moved down in weight to challenge Liam Smith for his WBO Light Welterweight title. This fight will be broadcasted live on HBO PPV at 9 PM ET.

Canelo Alvarez defeated Liam Smith via TKO to become the new WBO Light Middleweight Champion, Round 9, 2:29

Willie Monroe Jr. defeated Gabriel Rosado via unanimous decision (116-112, 118-110, 117-111) to become the new WBO Inter-continental Middleweight Title

Joseph Diaz Jr. defeated Andrew Cancio via TKO (Referee Stoppage), Round 9, 2:29 to win the NABF Featherweight Title

Diego De La Hoya defeated Luis Orlando del Valle via unanimous decision (99-91, 99-91, 99-91) to retain his WBC Youth World Championship

Diego De La Hoya vs. Luis Orlando del Valle

Round 1: De La Hoya starts with a couple of 1-2 punch combinations. De La Hoya stays in the middle and Del Valle remains cautious and doesn’t throw a lot of punches. De La Hoya connects well on a jab and pushes del Valle back, stunning him. The round ends with both fighters still trying to still find an opening, but not taking advantage of the slow action.

Round 2: The internet PPV stream on the Golden Boy website went down. Apparently a lot of people are having issues as well.

Round 3: Del Valle begins the round trying to close in and going for inside punches. Both men are now going for the knockout punch. The two fighters exchange right hooks and del Valle is slowly gaining more confidence.

Round 4: Del Valle once again starts attacking the inside and De La Hoya clinches. De La Hoya manages to punch through del Valle’s guard a few times and stopping any momentum del Valle may be having. De La Hoya keeps his distance against del Valle and ends the round with a nice combination.

Round 5: De La Hoya starts to dominate the round with strategic boxing, picking and choosing his opportunity. Del Valle keeps swinging away and De La Hoya either avoids getting hit fully or manages to dodge. De La Hoya gets a few good punches in, but neither is hurt. Not much action in this round.

Round 6: De La Hoya keeps punching through his guard once more and del Valle spins around seemingly dazed and confused. Del Valle gets hit with a nice 1-2 combination and he’s stunned again, but steps back and turns his back to De La Hoya. De La Hoya does not take advantage as del Valle’s face is beat red.

Round 7: De La Hoya starts being more aggressive and going for more than 2 punch combinations. De La Hoya starts chasing and del Valle can’t get into a groove (not like he has been all fight long). De La Hoya gets a good hook into del Valle and ends the round throwing a dozen punches, landing about half of them, none of them being particularly strong.

Round 8: Del Valle throws some weak hooks that don’t reach De La Hoya. Del Valle looks exhausted while De La Hoya does not even look like he went 8 rounds deep. De La Hoya keeps throwing a few more punches and keeps his distance as del Valle keeps throwing more punches that don’t even reach his opponent.

Round 9: The internet PPV stream on the Golden Boy website went down yet again.

Round 10: Del Valle lands a couple of hooks but De La Hoya keeps his guard up and is practically unaffected. Del Valle keeps throwing punches that barely touch De La Hoya. Del Valle lands a left hook and De La Hoya responds with a 1-2 combination of his own. The two clinch up and del Valle is throwing 1 punch at a time. De La Hoya just unloads on del Valle in the last ten seconds, almost knocking del Valle down before the bell rings.

This was a bit of a snoozefest. De La Hoya is a good counterattacking boxer, but this did not provide for a great fight.

Joseph Diaz Jr. vs. Andrew Cancio

Round 1: Diaz Jr. throws a flurry of punches, but only hits two of the punches. He keeps going for low punch followed by a right hook and then a left jab. Cancio stays quiet in the first round as he doesn’t throw many punches on his own. First round ends with Diaz Jr. throwing a couple of jabs and uppercuts

Round 2: Diaz Jr. and Cancio exchange a couple of uppercuts and Cancio is a bit more active in this round. Once more, Diaz Jr. goes for some more three punch combinations. The round ends with both men throwing jabs and hooks at each, but not really dealing any damage.

Round 3: Cancio pressures Diaz Jr. to the ropes and throws several punches, but Diaz Jr. escapes and both men are in the middle. Cancio looks mad and he starts connecting on more combinations and targeting the body. Diaz Jr. hits a left jab to Cancio’s face and makes a small cut. The round ends with Cancio once again putting Diaz Jr. to the ropes and throwing more punches.

Round 4: Cancio keeps going for pressure and putting his opponent to the ropes and starts connecting on body shots more often. Cancio is spending more time in the center and once Diaz Jr. is on the ropes, Cancio connects on head shot combinations. More blood is coming out of the bridge of Cancio’s nose. Diaz Jr. connects on a jab. Cancio hits a few more punches and ends the round on the offensive.

Round 5: Even though Diaz Jr. is being put in the corner, he keeps punching through Cancio’s guard. Diaz Jr. starts throwing more punches and being more active in this round than in the previous two rounds. Diaz Jr. lands several punches, some square in the face of Diaz Jr. Cancio ends the best round of the night thus far with a right hook.

Round 6: Diaz Jr. hits a body shot to Cancio. Cancio throws a hook and misses. Diaz Jr. hits five consecutive punches with some landing on Cancio. Diaz Jr. throws more combinations, with several uppercuts looking to worsen Cancio’s cut.

Round 7: Cancio goes back to pressuring Diaz Jr. back to the ropes, but is not as successful as he was earlier in the fight. He threw a few punches to Diaz Jr., but Diaz Jr. was throwing even more punches.

Round 8: Cancio starts getting Diaz Jr. to move around the ring as he lands several punch combinations. Cancio throws some punches but misses. The round ends with Cancio moving around the ring with Diaz Jr. putting the pressure and landing more punches.

Round 9: In between rounds, Cancio’s corner told him to start being more active. It’s not Diaz Jr. gets a few uppercuts landing on Cancio’s nose. Diaz Jr. keeps pummeling away until the fight ends because the referee stops the fight.

Willie Monroe Jr. vs. Gabriel Rosado

Round 1: Willie Monroe Jr. lands a left hook to Rosado’s face. Rosado puts Monroe to the corner and lands a few punches before the two clinch. The two remain idle in the center for pretty much the last 90 seconds of the round, barely throwing any good punches.

Round 2: Rosado throws a couple of punches while Monroe is in the corner and after an exchange, Monroe gets his arm held up by Rosado. Monroe lands a 1-2 combo while dodging a couple of punches. The two of them keep throwing punches at times but not much consistent activity.

Round 3: Monroe lands a couple of jabs, but then clinches with Rosado. Monroe lands several punches, putting Rosado in the corner. Every time Rosado pushes Monroe to a corner, Monroe escapes. The two exchange punches with Monroe constantly moving.

Round 4: Monroe is pushed to the rope early but escapes and the two throw some punches, mostly missing. The two then keep exchanging punches with no seemingly taking the upper hand. Monroe throws one more punch than Rosado in every exchange.

Round 5: More of the same from the last round with both men having their time winning punching exchanges and running around the ring.

Round 6: Both stay idle for the vast majority of the round until Monroe hits a couple of jabs and starts pushing for a more aggressive punch combination. This prompts Rosado to try and counter. The round ends with the two staying in the middle of the road.

Round 7: Monroe’s in the corner and Rosado lands a couple of uppercuts. Monroe then goes to the ropes and clinches with Rosado. Rosado keeps pushing Monroe to the rope and tries to find an opening, but can’t capitalize on the opportunity of Monroe in the rope.

Round 8: The two men immediately clinch and had to be separated. Monroe is running around the perimeter of the ring. Rosado goes to the inside and land some body shots. The two then exchange several punches to end the round.

Round 9: Monroe lands 3 consecutive jabs on Rosado’s face. Monroe accidentally punches Rosado in the back of the head. The back of his head starts to bleed from the punch and the referee is now starting to stay behind Rosado to look at the back of the head. The referee eventually pauses the fight to clean Rosado’s head. The fight resumes and they clinch. Rosado then explodes and knocks down Monroe but went down after the bell rings so it doesn’t count.

Round 10: Monroe is driven to the corner early and eats a few uppercuts from Rosado. Rosado then starts chasing and keep punching away. Monroe throws a couple of jabs , but Rosado blocks them easily. The two men clinch until they are separated again. The round ends with the two men trying to look for a punch to throw at.

Round 11: Monroe starts fighting back and landing several combos on Rosado. The two accidentally headbutt each other with Rosado taking the blunt of the damage and his left eye getting swollen. Monroe lands a huge jab to Rosado’s face.

Round 12: Monroe lands a jab and dodges a swift hook from Rosado. He does the same again and is hitting on several uppercuts. He’s constantly moving and mostly avoiding Rosado’s punches. Rosado gets away from Monroe and the fight ends with both men almost at different corners.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Liam Smith

Round 1: Liam Smith tries for a few combination while Canelo is waiting patiently. Canel goes for a jab and an uppercut, but can’t connect well. Canelo hits 4 straight jabs and an uppercut. Liam Smith also goes for a couple of jabs of his own. Canelo then heads for a couple of hooks. He follows it up with a hook-uppercut combo. Canelo ends the round throwing a few more jabs, but not doing much damage.

Round 2: Canelo stays active throwing more jabs, but his punches are not looking to do a lot of damage. Smith then throws a few combos of his own, pressuring Canelo to the ropes. Canelo then goes for several hooks and uppercuts. Smith then pressures Canelo to the corner and throws a few hooks. Smith is trying to hit Canelo’s face and the round ends with both men in the middle.

Round 3: Smith begins the round with a 1-2 combo. Canelo responds with a combo of his own. Both fighters only throw a jab before Canelo then pushes Smith to the ropes. Canelo goes for several hooks and methodically breaking Smith down with several small combos of his own. Smith ends the round with a jab, but hasn’t done a lot in the round as far as effective punching.

Round 4: Canelo goes for a couple of uppercuts and Smith responds with one on his own. Canelo accidentally hits a low blow and the ref pauses the fight. They clinch up in the ropes and then Canelo responds with a couple of combinations. The two constantly are running around the ropes and the round ends with not much activity.

Round 5: Canelo goes for a lunging jab and then proceeds to go for several uppercuts. Canelo then hits several hooks.to damage Smith’s body. Smith ends the round exploding for several punches, leaving Canelo hanging in the ropes, but not before Smith receives a cut above his right eye from a Canelo jab.

Round 6: Canelo is pressured to the ropes and Smith’s cut gets worse. The PPV stream starts to cut off in the first minute, but Canelo and Smith have done a good job at making sure that they’re not letting up.

Round 7: Smith brings the fight to Canelo, but Canelo manages to knock Smith down with a left hook to send Smith down on his rear end. Smith responds by continuing to push Canelo to the rope. The two clinch on the rope. Canelo then throws several hooks, but Smith then spends the last 30 seconds throwing a haymaker at Canelo in the corner

Round 8: Canelo is trying to replicate the knockdown from the previous round with right hooks to Smith’s head. Smith then hits Canelo with 7 straight uppercuts. Canelo goes for a couple of body shot, but do not do much damage. Canelo hits another body shot and sends Smith down again for a second time.

Round 9: Canelo then tries to hang on to the ropes before slowly working hsi way back into the middle of the ring. Canelo then reverses the role and has Smith on the ropes. Canelo knocks down Smith for a third straight round and the ref stops the fight midway through the 10-count. Smith was still on his back and we have a new champion.

This was an exciting end to what ultimately was an expectedly disappointing PPV. Now that Canelo is a world champion at 154 pounds, how will this affect the future Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez fight that is rumored to happen in 2017?
