Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin 2 To Take Place In Las Vegas

The highly-anticipated rematch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin will take place on the scene of the crime where a controversial draw failed to define a winner in their first fight.

It was announced that the Alvarez vs. Golovkin rematch, already scheduled to take place on May 5, will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the site of the first fight that ended in a split draw.

There was some debate as to where the rematch was going to take place. Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez told ESPN that Madison Square Garden, which was being considered as a potential venue for the first fight, made a strong push to host the rematch. Madison Square Garden and AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas were the two other venues being looked at by Golden Boy Promotions as hosts for the rematch.

The first fight between the two middleweight boxers took place on September 16, 2017 with judge Adalaide Byrd’s controversial 118-110 scorecard in favor of Alvarez being the biggest headline from that first fight, causing an uproar among many in the boxing community. The other two scorecards from that fight were 115-113 in favor of Golovkin and a 114-114 draw. Fightful had originally scored the first fight a 114-114 draw.

The fight in September drew 22,358, a record crowd for an indoor boxing event in Las Vegas, and generated a gate of $27,059,850, the third-biggest in boxing history. The fight also generated around 1.3 million pay-per-view buys, the second-highest pay-per-view buyrate for a boxing event for 2017.
