Canelo Alvarez Critical Of Ryan Garcia: “He’s Wasting A Lot Of Time And His Talent”

Four-division world champion boxer Canelo Alvarez was critical of his fellow Eddie Reynoso trained teammate, former interim WBC lightweight champion, Ryan Garcia, and questioned his dedication to the sport.

Alvarez spoke with Complex’s Adam Caparell ahead of his super-middleweight title unification bout with IBF champion Caleb Plant next Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and talked about how he thinks Garcia is currently wasting his talent. The 23-year old undefeated lightweight star was scheduled to take on Joseph Diaz Jr. for the interim WBC lightweight title on November 27 but had to withdraw from the matchup due to a hand injury.

“Look, Ryan has a lot of talent. But to me in my eyes, he’s wasting a lot of time and wasting his talent,” Alvarez said. “I look at him and don’t see him 100 percent dedicated and, to us, that’s a bad signal. We always remind him as a team to come to the gym, to train, and to learn because you need to be in the gym. You’re learning day-by-day, at the very minimum fighting five times a year. When I was beginning my career, I did 15 fights in one year. That’s where I was at the beginning of my career. So definitely he needs to be a little more dedicated.”
