Caleb Truax Shocks The World, Wins IBF Super Middleweight Title

James DeGale‘s reign as the IBF super middleweight champion has come to an end with perhaps the biggest boxing upset in 2017.

DeGale lost the title to Caleb Truax via majority decision in a hard-hitting affair that saw DeGale get hurt numerous times throughout the fight. Below is the ending of the fight from Fightful’s live coverage of the fight:

Round 12: DeGale moves across the ring. Truax is putting pressure to DeGale, but DeGale won’t give up, landing a left hand to Truax. Truax traps DeGale to the corner, landing a couple of punches. DeGale gets out of the corner, landing a short, right hook to Truax’s jaw. Truax lands a hard right to DeGale. DeGale throws a few hooks to Truax’s body. DeGale finishes the round with a couple of hard right hands.

Fightful scored round 12 for DeGale 10-9, making it a 95-95 draw (rounds 5 and 9 weren’t scored)

Official result: Caleb Truax defeated James DeGale via majority decision (114-114, 115-112, 116-112) to win the IBF Super Middleweight title

DeGale’s reign as champion started in 2015 when he beat Andre Dirrell for the then-vacant belt. After successful defending it throughout 2015 and 2016, DeGale took up a major unification fight against Badou Jack back in January. DeGale and Jack went the distance only to have the fight end in a draw. DeGale suffered numerous injuries that required surgery, putting him out of action for the majority of the year.

Truax won four of his last five fights since losing to Daniel Jacobs in 2015 in a WBA middleweight title challenge. Truax’s only loss in that span was to former super middleweight world champion Anthony Dirrell.

As for a potential rematch, DeGale said in the post-fight interview that he doesn’t think there is a rematch clause, but he would talk with promoters to see if a rematch can still happen. DeGale had also mentioned that it might have been best for him to have sat out for the rest of the year and get back to the ring when he’s 100 percent.
