Billy Joe Saunders Open To Facing Gennadiy Golovkin In Kazakhstan

Billy Joe Saunders wants to face Gennadiy Golovkin, even if it means going to his home country to make that fight happen.

During the July 6 Top Rank/MTK Global card in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, Saunders spoke in the ring and was spoke about potentially facing Golovkin down the road. After talking about how much loved being in Kazakhstan, Saunders spoke about wanting to face Golovkin, who was born in the country, and said he would love to make that fight happen in the Barys Arena.

“I’d like to thank the people of Kazakhstan for having me here. I’d love to fight Gennadiy Golovkin in this Barys Arena. Golovkin is a great champion and a brilliant fighter but I would love the opportunity to fight him. I’m going to sit down with my management at MTK Global and my promoter Frank Warren. I’m here calling Golovkin out in his hometown, in your home country. I want to give the Kazakhstan boxing fans the fight they deserve and that’s myself against GGG right here in their country,” Saunders said.

Golovkin has been negotiating a potential trilogy fight against unified middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez, but talks have slowed down to the point where the fight could be in jeopardy. As such, Golovkin could potentially be looking for another opponent, though a fight against Saunders would likely be one competing at super middleweight.

Saunders moved up in weight earlier this year and captured the WBO 168-pound title back in April with a win over Shefat Isufi. Since then, Saunders has yet to defend his new world title, but an offer for Saunders to unify title with WBA champion Callum Smith later this year has been sent.
