Berchelt vs. Vargas, Navarrete vs. Dogboe Being Planned For May 11

A world title doubleheader could be coming to an ESPN platform this May.

According to ESPN Deportes, two title rematches are being planned for May 11: Emanuel Navarrete vs. Isaac Dogboe for the WBO super bantamweight title and Miguel Berchelt vs. Francisco Vargas for the WBC super featherweight title.

Berchelt vs. Vargas had been penciled in for May 11 for some time after it was revealed that Berchelt is still nursing a hand injury from his last fight. Originally, the fight was scheduled for March 23 as the main event for a Top Rank on ESPN card Both Berchelt and Vargas had previously fought in January 2017 in a bout that resulted in nearly 2,000 total punches being thrown between both boxers. Berchelt, ahead on two of the three scorecards by just one point, won the fight by stopping Vargas in the 11th round to win the WBC title.

The 27-year-old Berchelt has made four title defenses since that 2017 win against Vargas, having defeated Miguel Roman, Maxwell Awuku, Jonathan Victor Barros and Takashi Miura. Berchelt is currently on a 14-fight win streak.

As for the Navarrete vs. Dogboe fight, that would be a rematch from their first bout last December that saw Navarrete upset Dogboe to win the WBO title. The loss ended Dogboe’s title reign which started in April 2018 with a win over Jessie Magdaleno.

Since losing to Navarrete, Dogboe had been adamant about getting a rematch with Navarrete and both sides had been exploring that possibility. The fight was originally set to take place on April 20 as part of the undercard for Terence Crawford’s WBO welterweight title defense against Amir Khan at Madison Square Garden
