Austin Trout Talks Wanting To Stop “Charlo Show”
It may not be a rematch against Jermall Charlo, but Austin Trout will be fighting a Charlo twin for a world title.
Austin Trout’s quest to win another world title at 154-pounds will see him fight Jermell Charlo on June 9 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. In a media event, Charlo said he wants to prove doubters wrong again and hopes to avenge his loss to Jermall and pick up a world title by beating Jermell.
“I respect Charlo because he didn’t have to take this fight. Now it’s time to get it on. When I fought his brother, I remember people counted me out and said history had been made before I even stepped into the ring. I’m here again to try to stop the ‘Charlo Show’ and start the ‘Trout Show,'” Trout said.
The last time Trout challenged a Charlo was in 2016 when Jermall stopped him in nine rounds to walk away as the IBF junior middleweight world title. Since then, Trout took a 17-month break from the sport to unsuccessfully challenge for the IBF title last October and was stopped by Jarrett Hurd. Trout, who most famously defeated Miguel Cotto in 2012, has since then stopped his losing streak to defeat Juan De Angel by unanimous decision back in February.
Jermell won the WBC title in 2016 when he knocked out John Jackson and has since then followed it up with two straight knockout wins in his two title defenses. The June 9 fight will be the co-feature of a Showtime boxing card at the Staples Center, headlined by Leo Santa Cruz vs. Abner Mares for the WBA featherweight title.
