Amir Khan Survives Early Knockdown, Dominates Samuel Vargas
A crazy back-and-forth exchange of early knockdowns did not stop Amir Khan from picking up a decisive unanimous decision victory over Samuel Vargas.
In the main event of a Matchroom Boxing card from Birmingham Arena in Birmingham, England, Khan defeated Vargas by unanimous decision (119-109, 119-108, 118-110) to pick up his second consecutive victory.
The fight started off very well in Khan as the former world champion quickly dropped Vargas towards the start of the second round. As Khan continued to dominate the round, Vargas threw a hard overhand right to drop Khan. The fight would continue with Khan outlanding Vargas and being the aggressor throughout the last 10 rounds.
Although it seemed pretty decisive towards the end of the fight, Vargas managed to sneak a hard right hand that stunned Khan right before the conclusion of the 11th round. Although Vargas tried to capitalize on Khan’s momentary defensive lapses, Khan still proved too much for him.
After the fight, Khan was happy with his performance and believed it is enough to handle the likes of Kell Brook and Manny Pacquiao, the two names linked to a fight against Khan. Khan said he would be open to fighting either man as the fight against Brook would be one of the biggest all-British boxing fights of the year.
A fight with Pacquiao would not only give Khan a shot at Pacquiao’s WBA “regular” welterweight title, but also would be one of the biggest global fights of the year. This is Khan’s second consecutive victory since a 2016 loss to Canelo Alvarez.
