Amir Khan Said Kell Brook Fight Will Have Rehydration Clause

The longstanding rivalry between British stars Amir Khan and Kell Brook has created a lot of demand for a fight between the two for years and now there has been a breakthrough in negotiations.

Khan, a former unified junior welterweight world champion, told Sky Sports Boxing that both he and Brook have agreed to compete to a fight at welterweight, but there a catch. Khan added that there is a 10-pound rehydration clause, meaning that neither fighter can weigh in heavier than 157 pounds the day of the fight, which would take someplace in 2019.

The news of negotiations progressing comes after months of speculation that the two former world champions would finally fight now since both Khan and Brook are promoted by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.

“He’s agreed to be 147, and also have a rehydration clause of 10 pounds. I’m happy with that. If he’s happy to take that, so am I. That fight can happen then 147 it is, and we’re with the same promotional team, so that makes the fight even easier. Let’s see what happens,” Khan said.

Brook has not fought at 147 pounds since losing his IBF title against Errol Spence Jr. in May 2017. Since then, Brook moved up in weight to try and become a contender at 154 pounds and is already 2-0 in fights at that weight and is already ranked No. 3 by the WBC at junior middleweight.

The 31-year-old Khan has won his last two fights against Phil Lo Greco and and Samuel Vargas, his first bouts since unsuccessfully challenging for Canelo Alvarez‘s WBC middleweight back in 2016.
