Amir Khan Displeased With WBC Removing Him As Welterweight Mandatory Challenger

With Shawn Porter becoming the new mandatory challenger to the WBC welterweight title, Amir Khan got pushed out and Khan is not happy.

In an interview with The Nation, Khan was displeased with the WBC removing from being the mandatory challenger to Keith Thurman‘s welterweight title after Shawn Porter defeated Andre Berto on April 22.

“I am a little upset but it just makes the division exciting,” Khan said. “I know I can become world champion again, if not the WBC one then maybe in WBA by defeating Peterson, the belt I was deprived of though cheating. I don’t care about what big mouths are talking. I will prove in the middle of the ring that Khan is still the best and show my critics that I still have that knockout punch in me, which had laid down many in the middle of the ring.”

The 2011 fight against Peterson was for Khan’s WBA welterweight title and Khan was referring to a drug test Peterson failed. Peterson won the fight but Khan was reinstated as champion after the failed test.

Khan has not fought since being knocked out by Canelo Alvarez on May 2016 when Khan challenged for the WBC middleweight title. Khan had long been in position as the WBC’s mandatory challenger at welterweight, but when he had his chance to cash-in and get a rematch against Danny Garcia after losing a unification bout to Garcia in 2012, he instead opted to fight Alvarez.
