Amanda Serrano To Go For World Title In Record Sixth Division

Amanda Serrano has emerged as one of the most highly-decorated women’s boxing stars in history and is now looking to do something only two boxers have ever accomplished.

Serrano, previously announced to compete on the undercard of the September 8 Barclays Center boxing card, will fight Yamila Esther Reynoso for the vacant WBO junior welterweight title. Should Serrano be successful and win the WBO title, she will have won a major world title in six different weight classes, something no other female boxer has ever accomplished. In fact, no other male boxer has ever accomplished that feat except for two boxers: Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya.

The 29-year-old Serrano currently holds the record for winning women’s boxing titles in five different weight classes and has won a world title in more weight classes than any Puerto Rican boxer, male or female, in the country’s history in the sport. Serrano was ranked No. 2 in the inaugural BWAA women’s pound-for-pound list earlier this year. Serrano has not lost a boxing fight since 2012 and has not fought since last November. Earlier this year, Serrano made her MMA debut for Combate Americas, where her fight against Corina Herrera ended in a draw.

Reynoso is a former world title challenger at 140 and 154 pounds. With an 11-4-3 pro record, Reynoso recently fought at welterweight, holding the Argentina national welterweight title. Reynoso has won three of her last four fights.

The September 8 card is scheduled to be headlined by Danny Garcia vs. Shawn Porter for the vacant WBC welterweight title. That fight will be televised on Showtime as well as a welterweight bout between Yordenis Ugas and Cesar Barrionuevo and a heavyweight bout between undefeated heavyweight Adam Kownacki and former world champion Charles Martin.
