Adrien Broner vs. Omar Figueroa In The Works For Next Spring

Showtime has plans for former world champion Adrien Broner and it includes another televised main event.

According to RingTV.com, Showtime plans to have Broner fight Omar Figueroa sometime next spring in either April or May. That fight figures to headline a Showtime boxing telecast. No weight has been determined for the fight, but since Broner and Figueroa have fought at both welterweight and junior welterweight, which means the fight will likely take place in one of those two weights. No venue for the fight had been discussed, but the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, where Broner has fought and regularly attends fights there, is a candidate to host the fight.

Figueroa hasn’t fought since beating Robert Guerrero into retirement this past summer. That fight headlined a Premier Boxing Champions card on FOX that had a record-low viewership for a boxing fight on the network.

The fight is currently not figured to have any world title implications, but the Showtime card will likely feature a world title fight. Broner’s last two fights against Mikey Garcia and Adrian Granados were non-title fights that headlined title fights, but did feature a world title fight as part of their respective undercards. The winner of Broner vs. Figueroa would likely be on the move up to world title contention at whatever weight class the fight is contested at.

Broner’s last fight against Garcia ended with Broner losing via unanimous decision. Broner had been linked to a possible fight with IBF junior welterweight champion Sergey Lipinets, but Lipinets will now fight Garcia in February and that fight also will be on Showtime.
