Adrien Broner Talks Changing Trainers For Jessie Vargas Fight
Former world champion Adrien Broner has had his ups and downs in the past few years, but now he’s making a few changes to his camp that he believes will help him get better in the ring.
Broner spoke during training camp about his new trainer and how it has been helping him. Broner has enlisted the services of Kevin Cunningham to train him for his fight against Jessie Vargas later this month. Broner said he was in need of a change and that Cunningham, whom Broner has known for years, will “keep him on his toes.”
“I felt like it was time to change. People say, ‘You are expected to change but you don’t, that’s why you end up in the same spots over and over’. So, I have to change something to get a different result. That’s why I had to step outside of the box and go for it,” Broner said.
Cunningham has helped train world champion boxers such as Cory Spinks, Devon Alexander, David Diaz and amateur boxing champion Stephen Shaw. Cunningham will now be responsible for helping train Broner, who is coming off a loss to current IBF junior welterweight champion Mikey Garcia in 2017. Broner has a 3-2 record in his last five fights, losing to Garcia and Shawn Porter.
Fightful will have live coverage of Broner vs. Vargas, which will headline a Showtime Championship Boxing card at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on April 21. Other notable fights taking place on the card is Gervonta Davis vs. Jesus Cuellar for the WBA “super” super featherweight title and Jermall Charlo vs. Hugo Centeno Jr. for the vacant interim WBC middleweight title.
