Adrien Broner Sentenced To 30 Days In Jail

Adrien Broner is going to be spending some time behind bars.

Former world champion Adrien Broner has been sentenced to 30 days in jail after missing his appointed trial time for a January incident outside of a Cincinnati bowling alley which saw him charged with felony assault and aggravated robbery charges.

Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Robert Ruehlman found Broner (32-2, 24 KOs) in contempt of court after he did not show up for his trial on July 19 on time.

Broner was supposed to arrive at the court house at 9 a.m on Tuesday. When he failed to do so, Ruehlman issued an arrest warrant for Broner. Broner did eventually arrive to the courthouse, albeit three hours later, but the judge still sentenced him to jail.

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Broner was said to appear ill when he arrived to the court house. He then told Ruehlman that “somebody put something in my drink” the previous night. He tried to convince the judge that he did not drink the previous night, but was unsuccessful.

The judge noted that Broner looked like he had a hangover, and didn’t buy his story. Ruehlman said that he was willing to dismiss the case had Broner arrived on time to the courthouse.

Will Welsh, Broner’s lawyer, told the Enquirer that Broner accepted the ruling.

“[Broner] certainly apologizes and understands why the judge was upset,” Welsh said.

The charges stem from an incident during the early-morning hours of Jan. 21 in which Broner allegedly assaulted a man and robbed him of $12,000 at gunpoint. Broner allegedly lost the money to the victim during a night of high-stakes betting on bowling games, knocked him unconscious outside the bowling alley after a confrontation took place.

According to the official Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office website, Broner was taken into custody at 12:45 p.m Tuesday. ET. Part of Broner’s entry includes the comment, “Do not release under any circumstances per Judge Ruehlman.”
