Adonis Stevenson To Have Rematch Against Andrzej Fonfara In June
While unified light heavyweight champion Andre ward and Sergey Kovalev are clashing with each other later this year, WBC champion Adonis Stevenson will be busy with his own rematch.
Stevenson announced on Twitter that he will be Andrzej Fonfara on June 3.
Yvon Michel, Stevenson’s promoter, did confirm to ESPN that the fight is going to happen, though he was noncommittal on the date or which television network would carry it.
“The fight with Fonfara is agreed upon, but still contracts (need) to be signed,” Michel said. “Place and dates still in negotiations. (We) will have confirmation about the network early next week. I am expecting a terrific fight. Last time there was a lot of drama in the course of the 12 rounds.”
Stevenson won the title back in 2013 when he beat Chad Dawson in the first round and has made seven defenses of the title. Stevenson defeated Fonfara in May 2014 via unanimous decision to retain the title.
As for Fonfara, after the loss to Stevenson, he has amassed a 4-1 record and defeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for the WBC International light heavyweight title in 2015. His lone loss in that period of time came in last June against Joe Smith Jr. He rebounded from the loss with a TKO win over former world champion Chad Dawson in the untelevised undercard of the Keith Thurman vs. Danny Garcia bout back in March.
