Adonis Stevenson Challenges Badou Jack To Unification Fight
New WBA “regular” light heavyweight champion Badou Jack has now captured the attention of another light heavyweight champion.
WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson took to Twitter to challenge Jack to a unification fight less than a day after Jack retired Nathan Cleverly on the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor pay-per-view card.
Jack scored a TKO victory over Cleverly in Jack’s light heavyweight debut after a run as a super middleweight world champion. Jack said frustrations over judging in his last couple of fights and difficulty making the 168-pound limit are what drove him to move up in weight. The win over Cleverly was Jack’s first win in 2017 after his January match against James DeGale ended in a draw.
Stevenson defended his title earlier this year when he beat Andrzej Fonfara on June 3. The WBC champion had been trying to get a unification fight with unified champion Andre Ward, but nothing has materialized as of yet.
Even if both sides agree to fight, it will have to wait a bit because Jack, as the winner of the August 26 fight, was ordered to fight interim champion Dmitry Bivol. Jack and Bivol have until September 11 to sign a fight contract, or else the WBA will issue a purse bid.
