CM Punk Jokes WWE Using ‘Cult Of Personality’ Had To Do With Him ‘Swinging His Big Ol’ Dick Around’
“Cult of Personality” by Living Colour has become synonymous with CM Punk, who started using the song as his theme when he was with ROH in 2005.
Punk used multiple themes in WWE, but eventually brought the song to the company in July 2011 when he returned on WWE Raw following Money in the Bank.
“It had a lot to do with me swinging my big ol’ dick around and making them invest in me as a person,” Punk joked when speaking to Martin Douglas of SPIN about his contract negotiations with WWE at the time.
WWE rarely licenses music for wrestlers, opting to use their in-house production instead.
When Punk returned to wrestling in August 2021 with AEW, “Cult of Personality” came with him.
“I think ‘overwhelmed’ is the all-encompassing word,” he said about his return. “There was such a buzz in the air that I could only hear the first note of the song and then I couldn’t hear anything else, because the crowd was so loud.”
Punk mentioned in the interview that he “briefly internalized the idea of changing his theme music” before saying, “It would be absolutely stupid to change my entrance music,” Punk said, “and I think that’s pretty powerful when you think about it. You know, people hear ‘Cult of Personality’ now and they think of CM Punk, and I think that is just so Goddamn special.”
Along with “Cult of Personality,” Tony Khan and AEW have licensed Baltimora’s “Tarzan Boy” (Jungle Boy), Rancid’s “Ruby Soho” (Ruby Soho) The Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind?” (Orange Cassidy), and more for wrestlers and video packages.
Punk picked up a victory over Shawn Spears on Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite. If you missed anything from the show, check out Fightful’s full report by clicking here.
