The ongoing saga between UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor and boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr took yet another turn this past Friday Night.
McGregor walked out to the ring at Madison Square Garden in support of Michael Conlan, who is an Olympic silver medalist and was making his professional boxing debut. It wasn’t long before McGregor was in front of a microphone and then he proclaimed that he was going to take over the sport of boxing.
“I’m the boxing guy, watch me take over boxing,” McGregor exclaimed at the event. “No one in this boxing game knows what’s coming, trust me on that one. When I step in (the boxing ring), I’m going to shock the whole goddamn world. Trust me on that. Look me in the eyes – 28 years of age. Confident as a (expletive). Long, rangy. Dangerous with every hand. Trust me. I’m going to stop Floyd. You’re all going to eat your words. The whole word is going to eat their words. I am boxing.”
A recent hurdle to the potential bout between McGregor and Mayweather Jr was eliminated when UFC President Dana White said he would not stand in the way of the two fighting.
“We’re getting close, don’t worry about it,” McGregor said. “You’ll hear about it. I’m out of here. I am boxing.”
Although there is no official date set yet for the fight, the UFC fighter told the LA Times that it could all be going down this September.
“I’m ready to box. I’ve been ready for a long time. The game’s going to be in shock when I step in the ring. Trust me on that,” McGregor said. “[September] is what I’m thinking. That’s what the word is. That’s what we’re close to doing."
Fox Sports also reported the rumored date for the fight would be September 16, but even McGregor said he hasn't spoken to Mayweather Jr yet about a date yet.
"I’ve tried to talk to Floyd. I flew to Las Vegas to have talks with Floyd and then he retired," he said. "He just doesn’t want to see me. He’s petrified. Wouldn’t you be? No one knows what to expect with me, and they shouldn’t. Because I don’t know what to expect either.”
However, the night was originally about the pro debut on Conlan and the ever-boasting McGregor did support his pal.
“It’s about Conlan tonight,” McGregor said. “I’m here to support him.”
Conlan would walk away victorious, with McGregor even shouting instructions to the fighter while taking his seat in the audience.
Mayweather Jr was not in attendance at the event, but we all know that he will be responding to the latest comments made by the UFC champion turned boxing rival.
