Tony Khan Jokes He Should Do A ‘Wednesday Night Wars’ Documentary Called ’74-1′
For 75 weeks, AEW Dynamite and NXT went head-to-head in what was labeled the Wednesday Night Wars.
The war begin when Dynamite premiered on TNT on October 2, 2019 and ended on April 7, 2021 with NXT airing its final episode on Wednesday before moving to Tuesdays.
AEW Dynamite would win the 18 to 49 demo 74 weeks to one, with NXT’s lone victory being on December 18, 2019 with a show featuring Adam Cole vs. Finn Balor and Rhea Ripley vs. Shayna Baszler.
When Adam Cole joined AEW in September 2021, AEW President Tony Khan was complimentary of Cole and his drawing power, saying Cole “scared the shit out of him” during the Wednesday Night Wars. Since the addition of Cole, AEW has added Undisputed ERA members Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly have also joined the company with AEW mentioning their NXT ties and issues on television.
“They still have issues,” Tony Khan told Brandon Walker of Rasslin when discussing AEW’s decision to keep the story between the three going. “When they came in, obviously, it’s a proven act. We have done great numbers.”
Khan continued, joking that he may produce a Wednesday Night Wars documentary on the AEW vs. NXT battle.
“The only time in the demo, in the Wednesday Night War, which, somebody told me, and it’s good advice, maybe we should make our own documentary of the Wednesday Night War. Like a one-sided documentary. I think it’s a really good idea,” he said with a smile. “We could call it like 76 to 1 or 75 to 1. The one involved Adam Cole in a huge match and most of the good quarters, I thought he was such an important part of it, but also, you can’t overlook Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish. When Bobby Fish came in, it made total sense. Are we not going to put Bobby Fish and Adam Cole back together?”
WWE famously produced a Monday Night Wars documentary in 2011 that told the story of WWE Raw vs. WCW Nitro. The company also put out a multi-part docuseries on the WWE Network that reflected on the Monday Night Wars.
