Bethe Correia Doesn’t Win, Does Celebration Dance Anyway
Bethe Correia says if she did not get kicked in the face, she would have beat Reneau.
At UFC Fight Night 106, Correia would fight three full rounds for the fifth time in her UFC career, resulting a majority draw against Marion Reneau. The judge's scorecards would reveal Correia earned a draw because the last round was scored 10-8 in favor of Reneau. That round featured a head kick from Reneau which disorientated Correia, who told MMAFighting.com if she was not kicked in the head so effectively or if she was not tired from the other two rounds, she would have won by knockout. Correia has ten victories in mixed-martial-arts and only two were knockouts.
“I believe I won the fight. I lost the third round, but I disagree that it was a 10-8. It could be a 10-9. I started well in the (third) round, defended her attacks on the ground, so I don’t think it’s fair. One of the judges even gave her one of the first rounds, and I disagree with that as well. But he’s there to judge, and I’m there to fight," said Correia. "She was better in the third round, but I believe that if she hadn’t landed that kick, or if I wasn’t so tired, I’d have kept dominating her or maybe knocking her out," she added.
Two judges scored the bout a draw while the third judge scored the fight for Reneau. Before the majority draw decision was announced, Correia was seen doing her signature victory dance, but even after it was announced there was no winner, Correia danced again. Dancing usually being synonymous with celebration, Correia was forced to explain why she danced despite the disappointing result.
“It's my mark. Even in the UFC video game, I dance after the fights. Fans love it, they ask me to dance all the time. It was so beautiful what the crowd did for me there, chanting my name so I wouldn’t lose in the third round. And I thought I had won when the fight was over, so I was so happy I had to dance for them even though I was completely tired," said Correia.
To recap: Correia disagrees with the scoring of the third round which forced the draw and hypothesized she could have won if her opponent did not rock her with a head kick or if fighting was not so tiresome.
