Wardlow: Billy Gunn Is Always Waiting Backstage To Give Me Advice
Wardlow has the look of a wrestler, but he wants to make sure he can cut it in the ring as well.
Wardlow has been attached to MJF from his AEW onset, acting as MJF’s bodyguard and the muscle of The Pinnacle. Though he has only gotten a couple of extended opportunities to showcase himself in the ring, Wardlow is confident he can carry himself between the ropes and show that he’s more than just a body guy.
“There’s a difference between in-ring shape and looking in shape. There are many individuals that don’t look like me that can go all day in the ring. I try to perfect both of those. I want to go in the ring, but I also want to look like I can be on the cover of Muscle & Fitness because that’s what I believe a professional wrestler should look like. We grew up on the 80s, 90s, and 2000s and there is a wild track record of physiques in professional wrestling. I want to be at the next level and be at the top of this business. In my opinion, you have to look the part. You can’t just go in the ring, you have to look the part as well. I want to do it all,” Wardlow said on Busted Open Radio.
One man who is still in great shape at the age of 58 is Billy Gunn, who remains active on AEW television. He also remains active behind the scenes, helping Wardlow after each match.
“I talk to Billy Gunn very often,” said Wardlow before naming other helpful hands backstage. “Mark (Henry), Jerry Lynn, he is so excited to help people. Everybody is. People are so hands-on and everybody, after a match, they are giving their two cents and putting in their input. Billy Gunn is standing there, waiting for me to come back to tell me ‘yay or nay’ or ‘do this, don’t do that.’ It’s phenomenal. We’re so lucky to have these guys to sit under their learning tree and listen to what they have to say. A lot of great advice. Not only from the vets, but guys that have been in the business for a while on the main roster. FTR have been extremely helpful.”
Wardlow is part of The Pinnacle with FTR (Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler), though he has been regularly teaming with Shawn Spears.
He will be in action at AEW Winter is Coming, taking on Matt Sydal. Fightful will have live coverage of AEW Winter is Coming beginning at 8 p.m. ET.
