Julianna Peña Not Thinking About Potential Kayla Harrison Matchup: “She’s Been Fighting In The B-Leagues”
Newly crowned UFC women’s bantamweight champion Julianna Peña is not really thinking about a potential matchup with undefeated PFL women’s lightweight champion Kayla Harrison following UFC 269.
Peña spoke with MMA Junkie’s Nolan King to reflect on her second-round submission victory over Amanda Nunes at the UFC’s last pay-per-view event of 2021 and responded with the following when asked what she thought about a future bout with Harrison, who the promotion is currently courting during her free agency process.
“Right now I just wanna bask in the moment of being the champion,” Peña said. “I just want to take time to just enjoy this moment. I think she’s (Harrison) the lesser of the training partners for her and Amanda Nunes. So if that’s the case and I just took out Amanda, I don’t really know what kind of position that would put her in. But she’s been fighting in the B-leagues, and I’m fighting in the UFC. I’m fighting at the top of the division. I’m fighting in the biggest league of this sport, so I don’t really pay too much attention to what she’s doing down there. If I’m going to talk about matchups, Amanda is the only matchup I think that makes sense for me and giving her that rematch.”
