Raquel Gonzalez Wasn’t Sure There Would Be A Women’s WarGames Match This Year, Is Ready To Win Again

Raquel Gonzalez is ready for NXT WarGames.

WarGames is a staple of the NXT brand. Starting in 2017, the promotion put their own spin on the WCW classic match and has since hosted at least one Morgan’s match per year. For the last two years, there have been two WarGames as the women have entered the battlefield as well as the men.

Last year, the emerging star of the WarGames match and the woman that picked up the victory, was Raquel Gonzalez.

This year, she anchors a team that includes Io Shirai, Kay Lee Ray, and the rookie, Cora Jade. Speaking exclusively with Sean Ross Sapp, Raquel reveals that she is ready for this year’s WarGames match and has already begun to think of some violent ways to utilize her teammates as weapons, specifically Io, whom she pinned last year to win the match.

“I’m feeling really good and I’m feeling confident because I already have one WarGames under my belt and not only have I been part of this type of match, but I’ve won this match. To top o my level of confidence, look at my team, I have the most stacked team in WarGames, men’s or women’s side. Kay Lee Ray is the most vicious, longest-reigning NXT UK Women’s Champion, Io Shirai, the genius of the sky, who literally threw herself from the top of the cage in a trash can last year. You never know what you’re going to get from this woman, it’s insane. Then, our underdog, Cora Jade. She has already shown that she has so much fight and so much passion. I truly believe she’s going to be incredible in WarGames with us.”

She’d later add, “I have thought about [throwing Io]. I was like, ‘Now Io and I are on the same team, how can I use her as a weapon?’ That’s the advantage I think I always have. Whatever weapon I have in my hand, I also have my strength on my side. I could really do anything. Maybe I want to throw Dakota Kai in a trash can and roll her over. Maybe throw her out of the cage. I’m already thinking about what weapons are going to be under the ring and what I can do with certain weapons and if there’s anything different i might see or I know that is out there that I could grab and take in with me. I’m very excited because it’s an opportunity for us to go at it. I’m ready.”

On the other side of the cage, Raquel is focused on Dakota Kai. Her former Tag Team Championship partner turned bitter rival,  Raquel expressed lingering tension between she and Dakota after Dakota cost her the NXT Women’s Championship in a match against Mandy Rose.

“She did ask in her own way, with a boot to the face. That’s fine. I gave her the opportunity. She had her chance to try and take the title from me at NXT TakeOver 36. What is warranting even more backstabbing? Hitting me in the back with a shovel so that I lose my title to Mandy Rose? Now I have to watch her and Las Toxica [Toxic Attraction] walking around with their titles, acting like they own the place and they earned some kind of trophy.”

Raquel admits that she wasn’t sure after all of the changes being next to the brand has gone through, if there would even be WarGames this year and she definitely wasn’t sure if women would be entering the cage again.

“I was curious if we would have WarGames, especially the women having an actual match. When we got the news and got into who our teams were going to be, I got very excited because this is the kind of atmosphere I thrive on and I feel like Raquel Gonzalez shows her brutality, domination, and why she is the alpha the women’s division. I’m sorry to say, but I think I’m allowed to say that. There is no one who can stop me, stand next to me, and look me eye to eye. “

Raquel looks to repeat history and win WarGames for the second year in a row on Sunday, December 5, 2021. Fightful will have live coverage of the event as it airs live on Peacock in America and on the WWE Network internationally.
