Play-by-Play

(#2) Paulo Costa vs. (#5) Marvin Vettori

Round One – The main even of the evening is underway with veteran referee Jason Herzog as the third-man inside of the octagon. After Costa enters the cage, he runs up to Vettori and the pair exchange words while both being held back from octagon security. After introductions from ring announcer Joe Martinez and final instructions from the aforementioned Herzog, this one is officially underway. Costa opens with a spinning front kick then follows it up with a heavy kick that lands on the lead leg of Vettori and adds another one for good measure. Costa goes for a kick to Vettori’s body but slips and Vettori swarms but misses a flurry of shots. Back in the center of the cage, Vettori latches on and gets Costa in the clinch but Costa quickly powers out and the pair circle back to the middle of the octagon. Vettori lands a straight right that garners the attention of Costa, who counters with a stabbing front kick to the body that lands. Vettori lands another straight right and Costa responds with yet another body kick. Vettori throws another flurry of punches which are mostly blocked by Costa and goes for a high kick that just misses. Vettori pushes the pace and lets off yet another flurry of shots to a cornered Costa who has no choice but to push back with a right hook that just misses but slows Vettori down for the time-being. Vettori continues to push the pace, lands a straight right and the pair don’t offer much in the final few seconds before the buzzer sounds to end the opening frame.

Round Two – Round number two opens up with Vettori again the aggressor and lands a pair of jabs that land flush on the bridge of the nose of Costa. Vettori missed a right hook and Costa counters with a massive hook of his own that sends Vettori back, Costa swarms but Vettori does a great job of avoiding any further damage and appears to have recovered as Costa looks spent after going for the finish. However, Costa ends up pushing the pace himself and lands a nice uppercut to the body of Vettori and follows it up with a straight left but Vettori perfectly times a takedown and ends up on the back of Costa but Costa powers back to his feet and circles back to the center of the octagon but Costa pokes Vettori in the left eye which causes referee Jason Herzog to step-in and calls for a break in the action to allow the octagon-side doctor to check on Vettori. Herzog explains to Costa that he needs to be careful but Costa starts complaining which causes Herzog to deduct a point away from Costa before resuming the fight. Costa narrowly missed two-straight high kicks and Vettori initiates the clinch but quickly disengages but lands an elbow and a follow pair of right hands on the break. Vettori lands a hard left hook but Costa walks through it and lands another shot to the body of Vettori as the buzzer sounds to signify the end of round number two.

Round Three – The third round is underway and Vettori continues to push the pace and lands a straight right, missed a left hook and Costa responds with a spinning wheel kick that just misses. Vettori lands a left jab and sneaks in a knee to the body shortly thereafter. Vettori grabs Costa and presses him against the cage, quickly breaks and lands an elbow on the way out before lighting Costa up with a slick 1-2 that both land. Vettori drills Costa with a left hook and Costa shoots for a takedown and gets it. Costa lands a few heavy shots, Vettori looks to scramble back to his feet but Costa grabs the neck and looks for a guillotine but Vettori slips out and ends up in top control. Vettori seems content to ride the final 30-seconds out while on top until the buzzer sounds which closes round number three.

Round Four – Main event rounds are upon us and Costa immediately throws a high kick that partially lands and Vettori surges in for the clinch and has the Brazilian tied against the fence where he unloads a left hook on the break as the pair circle back to the center of the octagon. Vettori’s sporting a cut on the outside of his right eye but it doesn’t seem to have much, if any effect on the Italian contender. Vettori unloads a flurry of shots to a cornered Costa but Costa pushes forward and stops Vettori in his tracks with a right hook that finds it’s mark. Vettori throws back, landing a massive overhand left but Costa somehow walks through it and lands a kick to the body of Vettori, who dives in for a takedown but Costa stuffs the attempt and gets back to the middle of the cage. The pair trade heavy shots but not much comes of it as the buzzer sounds to send this one to the fifth and final round.

Round Five – The final round gets underway with Costa throwing yet another high kick but still can’t quite find a home for it as Vettori responds with a straight left that’s partially blocked. Costa lands a thunderous body kick, follows it up with an uppercut to the body before Vettori has a takedown attempt shunned aside by Costa, Vettori goes right back in for another takedown but again is denied by Costa, who continues the barrage to the body which forced Vettori to go for yet another takedown but is denied by Costa yet again. The final minute approaches and both men look spent but continue to fire off shots as Costa lands a right hook, Vettori responds with a straight right that lands, he goes in for another takedown but Costa keeps himself on the feet and Vettori rides out the final 10-seconds with Costa clinched against the cage.

Dawson rides a pretty uneventful round out with top control as the buzzer sounds to send this one to round number two.

Round Two – The second frame opens up and Glenn continues the bevy of kicks to the lead leg of Dawson, who again hunts for the takedown and eventually gets it and ends up in side control. Glenn scrambles but ends up on his stomach and Dawson again grabs the back, Glenn kicks off the cage and looks for a submission but Dawson is alert to the danger and gets back to top control. Dawson looks for a head and arm choke but Glenn defends it well until the buzzer sounds which ends round number two.

Round Three – The third and final round is underway and Dawson ducks out of the way of a straight left from Glenn and dives in for a takedown but the attempt is stuffed by Glenn, who ends up in partial top control then rolls Dawson to his back and gets proper control from the top before quickly switching to half guard, where he looks for a head and arm choke but Dawson tucks his chin and moves aside to escape danger for the moment before trying to scramble back to his feet but Glenn shoves him back down and lands some heavy shots from the top, gains side control and lands a few elbows and heavy right hands and Dawson is really scrambling around, Glenn stands up, a downed-Dawson kicks the legs of Glenn, who dives back on top and continues the barrage of right hands before looking for another head and arm choke but Dawson scrambles around and the buzzer sounds to send this one to the judges’ scorecards.

Jessica Rose-Clark vs. Joselyne Edwards

Round One – Clark immediately dives in for a takedown and gets it. Clark slightly lifts and shoves Edwards to try and create some separating but Edwards is tightly latched on and avoids and heavy shots for the time-being. Clark stands but remains in top control and fires off a few shots that land on the cheek of Edwards. Not much action happens and referee Keith Peterson forces the pair to their feet where Clark immediately initiates the clinch and gets Edwards pressed against the cage. Clark gets the takedown but ends up front flipping which allows Edwards back to her feet, who also ends up in control of the clinch against the fence. Clark’s able to slide out of the hold and ends up locking Edwards right back into the clinch and quickly trips her up and gets the takedown, Edwards scrambled back to her feet but is tossed back to the mat as the buzzer sounds to send this one to the second round.

Round Two – The second round begins and Clark gets right back to the clinch but Edwards is able to reverse momentum and ends up in control with Clark pressed against the cage. Clark latches onto the right leg of Edwards and successfully gets the single-leg takedown and ends up in half guard. Clark appears to be looking for an arm bar but gets back to her feet before quickly dives back down in top control.

Round Three – Edwards opens up the final frame with a bevy of punches and it appears as if she believes she needs a finish to win this one. Clark wastes little time in diving in for another takedown and gets it. The Cageside doctor determines that Caceres can continue and the bout resumes. Caceres lands a pair of right hooks but Choi again meets him with a straight right that stuns him but this time Caceres responds with a heavy kick to the body which Choi counters with a jab and a straight left at the buzzer.

Round Two – Round number two begins but this time it’s Choi who lays in with the kicks to start the round. Caceres initiates the clinch but Choi slips out and circled back to the center of the octagon.
